Thames Mariner No.8628 Lodge reached its fiftieth year in 2025, closing the first half-century of a lodge shaped by friendship, charity, ritual, and a strong connection with the river and the town of Marlow.
The lodge was founded in 1975 under its inaugural Worshipful Master, Don Wright. In those early years Thames Mariner No.8628 quickly began to form the traditions that still define it, including the Lodge of Instruction, a growing membership, and the compass logo designed by Peter Powles in 1981 which remains part of the lodge's identity today.
Through the 1980s and 1990s the lodge matured, welcomed new members, and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1999. The years that followed brought steady growth, memorable ceremonies, and a demonstration of an eighteenth-century initiation ceremony in 2005, reminding members that tradition is strongest when it is kept alive with care and good humour.
The fourth decade saw Thames Mariner No.8628 continue its charitable work and fellowship, including significant fundraising reported by the Charity Steward in 2008. It was also a decade marked by service, loss, and the quiet continuity provided by long-standing members who helped newer brethren take their place in lodge life.
The most recent decade tested every lodge. Thames Mariner No.8628 came through the disruption of the pandemic, held an open evening that brought new applications, and continued to welcome candidates and visitors. The anniversary year also marked the lodge's fiftieth Worshipful Master, a fitting point from which to look ahead.
